“Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel’s table” (1 Kings 18:19).
Jezebel is generally held in contempt by Bible readers because she was notorious for Baal worship. That should not be surprising because her father had covenanted with Baal and betrothed her to Baal at birth. One of the meanings of her name is, “Baal is husband”. Worse still, she stirred up Ahab to work wickedness in the sight of God (1 Kings 21:25).
But there are a few positive lessons to learn from Jezebel. For example, she was a very focused goal getter who would never take ‘No’ for an answer. Whatever Jezebel wanted, she got because she pursued her evil goals with unrelenting gusto.
But the big lesson is her commitment to the wellbeing of those she considered her own. By the admission of Elijah the prophet of God, four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and four hundred prophets of the groves ate at Jezebel’s table. That means, she fed eight hundred and fifty prophets every day.
Jezebel did not live to herself alone. She continually put smiles on the faces of nearly a thousand people every day, when some people cannot even be kind to their own. In the same terrain where a man like Absalom chased his own father away from the throne and the kingdom, the kindness of Jezebel to her idolatrous prophets should at least be noted.
Beloved, who are you using the resources that God has blessed you with to feed?
