FOLLOW PEACE WITH ALL MEN (II)

“Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it” (Psalms 34:14).

Observing the command to be at peace with all men is indispensably necessary, especially for the believer. Being peaceable is a virtue every Christian must possess. We must be ready to take responsibility for ensuring that we follow peace with all men as much as it is possible.

The need to take responsibility is the reason why in many of the epistles in the Bible, we are taught to consciously put away those things that could generate strife and breach the peace we have with others. For example, we are to put away things like anger, wrath, malice, filthy communication and lies (Colossians 3:8-9). In other words, the man who wants to be at peace with others must avoid these unhealthy emotions.

As we put off those things, there are also other things we must consciously put on to facilitate peace with our neighbours. Some of these are “bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, and longsuffering” (Colossians 3:12). Then, we must deliberately walk in love because love is powerful enough to cover a multitude of offenses (1 Peter 4:8).

Beloved, whatever character you have that constantly brings you into conflict with others is certainly not of God and must be jettisoned immediately. If you need to ask the Lord for help in this matter, please do. By the same token, you must ask for the help of the Holy Spirit to cultivate and bear His fruit,  which will help you live peaceably with others. That is the way to actively seek peace and pursue it. May the Lord help us all in Jesus name.
