“Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another” (Romans 14:19).
The Bible often places much responsibility on the individual when it comes to following peace with others. For example, today’s Bible verse says you are the one to “follow after the things which make for peace”. You are expected to use all your energy in getting along with others. It means there is a limit to which you can blame others when peace is wanting.
To be at peace with others will often require taking control of your emotions. It calls for a great deal of emotional discipline. You must take responsibility for your emotional stability and wellbeing because people will try your patience and stretch your capacity to accommodate other’s eccentricities.
The fact is that while you may not always be answerable for the conduct or behaviour of others toward you, you are completely answerable for your own conduct toward them. You may not always be able to prevent some folks from opposing and picking up quarrel with you, but it is entirely in your hands not to begin a contention or originate a quarrel with anyone. That is why the Bible says you should be at peace in as much as it lies in you (Romans 12:18).
Beloved, you can choose love, patience, tolerance, and peace instead of hatred, anger, resentment, and strife. However, choosing the right responses to the provocations of others cannot be done by your natural strength or the arm of flesh. To take charge of your emotions, you will require God’s help again and again. May God help us all in Jesus name.
