FOLLOW PEACE WITH ALL MEN (VII)

“Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them” (Romans 16:17).

There are people of such tempers and dispositions that it is impossible to live peaceably with them. For example, no matter what you do, the wicked will not sue for peace. Even the Lord says, there is no peace for the wicked! (Isaiah 48:22).

The Epistle to the Romans tells us to salute certain people but avoid those who perpetrate wickedness, create divisions and cause offences among brethren. When you are for peace, they are for war because they do not know the way of peace (Romans 3:17). Avoiding them does not mean hating or quarrelling with them, but keeping them at arms length and loving them from afar. Remarkably, it is the same Epistle that commands living peaceably that also tells us to avoid incorrigible opposers of peace.

Sometimes, it is not only impracticable, but unlawful and unhealthy to remain at peace with some folks. When the pursuit of peace conflicts with God’s pleasure, compromises holiness of life, or endangers the wellbeing of others, it becomes displeasing to God. Therefore, we should never sacrifice the glory of God for the sake of peace with men. Hence, Paul puts the condition, “If it be possible“ (Romans 12:18).

God wants peace with all men and has made adequate provision to ensure peace. But it is not all men that want peace with God. You also might want peace, but some people are not interested. When you have honestly done all you can to attain peace but the other person is unwilling, receive grace to be at peace with yourself.
