“And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel” (1 Samuel 15:35).
The command to live peaceably with others cuts across all spectrum of human relationships. It is not merely a religious admonition to observe so we can please God. It is also a divine strategy to help us have the best of this life and fulfil our days on earth.
But sometimes, pursuing peace can become costly, risky and life-threatening. For one, not all men fear God. David labelled Joab a wicked man for killing Abner who came to seek peace (2 Samuel 3:34). Again, not all men are spiritually minded. A man who does not mind the things of the spirit will find it difficult to toe the line of peace (Romans 8:6). Thus, we must allow God’s wisdom to guide us in this matter.
After delivering God’s judgment to Saul, Samuel came no more to see Saul until he died. That withdrawal was perhaps for his own safety. Indeed, Saul attempted to get to Samuel’s place while seeking to kill David. But the Holy Spirit arrested and restrained him from having any personal interaction with Samuel.
Samuel’s withdrawal from Saul was not out of hatred or any unkind feeling. In fact he was concerned for Saul and grieved deeply over him, and did not rejoice at his fall. But he knew that he needed to part with Saul because their views and principles had become widely dissimilar. Finally, he had to separate so that his service to the Lord would not be hindered.
May we not pursue peace and lose the Prince of peace.
