“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).
Today’s Bible verse is a common reference in prayer meetings, especially when dealing with community or national issues. Intercessors across the world, praying for their land have probably used this scripture verse more than any other.
God, in response to Solomon’s prayer at the dedication of the historic temple, assured that He would always answer our cry for help in time of trouble. Although He was speaking to natural Israel at the time, the words, as with most other parts of Scripture, are applicable to all who believe in the God of Israel.
However, even though this is principally a scripture for intercession, my interest today really has nothing to do with prayer. Rather, it is God’s readiness to identify with His people and not deny them, even when they are undeserving of His affiliation.
“If my people, which are called by my name…”. These are people who walk in pride and arrogance, who do wickedness and take pleasure in sin. Yet, God is not ashamed to admit that they are His people, called by His name. Yes, they need to repent, turn from their wicked ways and seek His face. But while they are yet to do all that, God says He won’t deny that they are His people.
For us also, God pledges His unfailing love, His loving-kindness and eternal commitment. He is the “everlasting Father”, a Father who loves to no end. Let us lean on His love and do His pleasure. Then, God will do the unusual in our lives that will make the whole world know that we are God’s special people indeed.
