“Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright” (Hebrews 12:16).
Esau, the first son of Isaac had an ungoverned appetite for food. He loved his stomach so much that he could do anything for a piece of bread. At a point, he even despised his birthright and sold his position as firstborn for just “one morsel of meat”. What a profane person indeed! What indiscipline!
Appetite is synonymous with gratification. It often relates to things we want and not what we need. It is those things we crave to indulge or please ourselves, especially the carnal self. There are many like Esau who crave for junk food as if nothing else is more important in life. Others manifest their appetitive weaknesses in the area of sex, gossip or some other things that do not truly define life.
An untamed appetite will lead to unnecessary indulgence and make you trade the things that matter for things that don’t. Imagine Esau trading precious covenant blessings for a plate of porridge. Others have forfeited their glorious destiny for one moment of sexual pleasure. Many have thus become profane and ended as lowlifes because they could not rule their appetite.
To rule your appetite, the Bible says you should put a knife to your throat. That means you should put yourself under discipline as someone who is in grave danger. It is that serious because if you don’t rule your appetite, it will ruin you. An unbridled appetite can lead you to an early grave.
Ultimately, appetitive desires are nothing but lust. The only way out is self discipline. You can achieve self control by the help of the Holy Spirit. Receive that help today, in Jesus Name.
