“Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy” (Proverbs 20:28).
Haman was the chief minister to king Ahasuerus. Even though he had a big position akin to Prime Minister of the kingdom, he did not have a large heart required to run his position. He is a good example of how not to be a leader.
Mercy and truth are common attributes of leaders with a large heart. In particular, merciful leaders are usually treasured by their followers. Mercy and truth separate true leaders from mere rulers. Leaders who are guided by these virtues in their policies, actions and relationships with their followers usually run crises free regimes and leave behind enduring legacies.
Haman’s leadership style had no place for mercy and truth. He did not know that leadership is not about the leader, but about the people, the enhancement of their values, and the general uplift of the society. He also did not know that the throne is established and preserved by mercy, not by wickedness. His utter disregard for mercy shortened his reign as a leader and robbed him of the joy of leadership.
Friends, at whichever level you are leading, whether as a parent in the home, supervisor in an organization, political office holder, or unit leader in the church, please ensure that you build mercy and truth into whatever you do. You will enjoy massive loyalty from the people you lead, and be effective as a leader.
Remember that wickedness is never an asset in leadership. You may have your way, but you will never have the love and loyalty of your followers. Remember also that dishonesty will eventually destroy and whatever good is built on falsehood will never last.
