“And we went before to ship, and sailed unto Assos, there intending to take in Paul: for so had he appointed, minding himself to go afoot” (Acts 20:13).
Paul was a very busy missionary, criss-crossing cities and taking shipping across continents. However, on this occasion recorded in today’s Bible verse, Paul decided to walk while other team members boarded the ship. Simply put, Paul chose to exercise.
Walking is the easiest way to exercise. It is something you do already, but now, you want to intentionally do it for the purpose of exercising. Everybody can walk, except the totally lame. Walking is also the most affordable exercise, not costing a dime in fees for fitness instructors or gym subscriptions.
You can walk anywhere. If for safety reasons you cannot walk outdoors, walk within your yard. Sometimes, when I cannot go on the streets, I walk round my house for an hour, covering nearly 6,000 steps. Sometimes, I push on for another 45 minutes to reach the recommended 10,000 steps per day.
Walking brings immense benefits for heart health, digestion, and overall well-being. A friend was once scheduled for an operation for back pain. But someone counselled him to walk for at least one hour every morning. He took heed and together with some other tips, his back improved in few weeks. Eventually, the pain disappeared and the surgery aborted.
Finally, the Christian can obtain added spiritual benefits by combining praying and walking. I believe Paul opted to walk that he might exercise and use the opportunity to pray and meditate without distractions. You also can do same. Please take a prayer walk and make it a regular part of your life.
