HEARING GOD FOR YOURSELF (IV)

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27).

I have heard people say that some have the grace of hearing God. There is really nothing like that. For, if it were to be true, we can rightly accuse God of playing favourites. The truth is that all children of God have equal access to the voice of God, at least at the basic level.

The primary qualification needed to hear God or receive divine leading is to have the Spirit of God. All children of God who have been born of His Spirit are therefore qualified to hear His voice (Romans 8:14-16). Moreover, Jesus disclosed that every sheep is entitled to hear the shepherd’s voice (John 10:27). If you are born again and you are deprived of the voice of your Shepherd, you should feel free to petition the Lord.

But there are clear procedures to follow in order to access God’s voice. The first step is to learn to hear God in the written word, that is, the scripture. The Bible is the first line of communication between you and God. If you cannot hear God in the Bible, you will not hear Him in any other way. Even Daniel the prophet had to consult what was written in order to hear God concerning the promised deliverance of the Jews from captivity (Daniel 9:2). You must first know the voice of God in what is written.

Beloved, the Bible is God speaking to you. Believe and obey that first line of communication and you will be ready for more direct access to divine leading.
