“There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification” (1 Corinthians 14:10).
Different kinds of voices can come from the spirit realm with significant capacity to impact our lives positively or negatively. Some people have heard voices which they presumed to be of God, and which they followed to their ruin.
If you will not live in error and stumble through life, you must know how to distinguish God’s voice from other voices that fly about in the spiritual world. You must develop your spiritual capacity so that you will be able to discern every subtle move of the enemy to deceive and manipulate. Paul’s experience at Philippi clearly illustrates the point being made.
At Philippi, a young lady began to prophesy that Paul and his company were servants of the most high God who came to show the way of salvation. Although she was correct, she was speaking by a spirit of divination. For a while, Paul endured her “prophetic” utterances. Then he became grieved in his spirit and cast out the familiar spirit operating through her.
While Nehemiah was rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, Delaiah who was shut up in the temple prophesied that Nehemiah’s life was in danger and that he should go hide in the temple. But Nehemiah discerned that God had not sent him, but that he was hired by Tobiah and Sanballat to prophesy and make him afraid (Nehemiah 6:10-13).
A discerning spirit is essential to judging spiritual encounters. May the Lord cause us to grow in discernment as we press on to know Him more and more.
