“Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the LORD, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day” (1 Samuel 28:18).
In the matter of hearing from God, there are hindrances that must be eliminated and distractions to avoid. Let us deal with the hindrances first. These are things that could block your spirit from gaining access to the voice of God.
The primary thing that can cut you off from God’s voice is disobedience. Disobedience to the commands of the Lord silences His voice to you and terminates your access to divine direction. The commands of God can come through the words of the Bible that you read, the declaration of God’s counsel by His servants, the prophetic voice that comes through His messengers or the inner voice that you pick up in your spirit.
Saul disobeyed the divine instruction that came through Samuel the prophet and cut himself off every channel through which the Lord could communicate with him (1 Samuel 28:6). In him we learn the critical lesson that when you have not or did not take appropriate action on the last thing God said to you, there will be no reason for Him to bother saying another thing. Obedience to the last instruction is the ticket to hearing the next instruction.
Beloved, your obedience is a demonstration of your readiness to keep engaging with the voice of God. Whether in tough situations or easy circumstances, may the Lord grant us grace to execute every command or counsel He brings our way.
