“And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house” (Luke 1:56).
Discussions on Mary, the mother of Jesus have often focused majorly on her chastity and faith. While those are very fundamental, there are a lot more things to learn from this exceptionally virtuous woman.
The angel of the Lord had just visited Mary with the greatest news she would ever hear, that she was the chosen vessel through whom the Saviour of the world would be born. Such an announcement would normally predispose the proud to an unparalleled level of arrogance. To be the “mother of God” as the Catholics would say, is not a small thing. But that did not take anything away from Mary’s humility and most especially her compassionate heart.
Soon after the angel left, Mary went to visit Elizabeth, her elderly cousin because she had been told by the same angel that Elizabeth was pregnant and in her sixth month. Apparently, Mary felt Elizabeth would need some help and her bowels of compassion would not let her rest until she made herself available. For the next three months, Mary left her business, forgot about herself and stayed with Elizabeth, assisting her with house chores and in other ways she needed help. What a compassionate soul!
We also ought to come down from our high horse and render kindness to our kith and kin who might need it, whether they be near or far. Like Mary, it is time to forget about our comfort and convenience and expend precious time and energy to go care for someone in need, even without being prompted by anyone. May God help us all.
