THE WISDOM OF GRATITUDE

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God” (Philippians 4:6).

Thanksgiving is very important to God. Among my people, it is said that gratitude is the food that God eats. Serve Him thanks and praise seven times a day: He will feast on it with pleasure. A grateful heart, a thankful soul are ever His delight.

David obviously understood this. Thus, he would always bless or thank the Lord and praise Him continually (Psalms 34:1). Sometimes, he would praise God seven times a day just because of His words (Psalms 119:164). He was verily the apostle of thanksgiving.

Of particular interest today is the vital connection between prayer and thanksgiving. While it is good and necessary to pray, the scripture teaches us to envelope our prayers with thanksgiving. We should never approach God in prayer without accompanying our petition with copious thanksgiving.

This is because gratitude motivates God to do more for us beyond our prayer. Truly, God is able to do exceeding abundantly above all we ask for or think (Ephesians 3:20). But it is gratitude that provides the path to convert that promise into reality. Besides, a grateful heart will attract quicker answers to prayer because God knows that the stretching forth of His almighty hand of providence would be met with instant gratitude.

So, while it is in order to continue in prayer, you must also ensure that you watch in the same with thanksgiving  (Colossians 4:2).  May constant gratitude to God never become burdensome to us. May God baptise us with the spirit of thanksgiving.
