“Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways” (Psalms 128:1).
One of the very first things I learned from the Bible on the subject of the fear of the Lord is that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). However, as can be seen from today’s scripture verse, the fear of the Lord is not just the beginning of wisdom, but also the foundation for blessing.
To fear the Lord is to have deep reverence for Him in your heart and to allow that reverence to govern your life. The Bible defines the fear of the Lord as hatred of evil (Proverbs 8:13). It is having enough reverence for God to honour Him in every way and stay clear of anything that could displease Him.
If you will relate with the Lord in this manner, you are guaranteed His blessings in so many ways. For example, you shall eat the fruit of your, you shall be happy, and it shall be well with you (Psalms 128:2). The blessings of the Lord shall also extend to your spouse, children and entire household (Psalms 128:3). Finally, you are guaranteed the blessing of long life that you may see your grandchildren (Psalms 128:6).
But please note that the fear of the Lord must first produce compliance with God’s commands before it can deliver blessings. To walk in the ways of God is to obey His words and do the things that are pleasing to Him. May there be sufficient eagerness in us to fear the Lord and walk in obedience to Him.
