“Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good” (2 Samuel 10:12).
Courage is not necessarily the absence of danger, fear or intimidation. Jesus already told us that in this world, there shall be tribulations (John 16:33). Courage is the ability of an individual to push forward and push through, even when conditions are unfavourable.
In the battle against the children of Ammon, Joab saw that the battle was against him before and behind (2 Samuel 10:9). But he knew that capitulation was not an option in spiritual warfare. Since there is no provision for any armour for our backside, the Christian cannot turn his back on the enemy. Thus, Joab chose to take courage to confront the challenge before him and encouraged the rest of the army to also be strong and be of good courage.
When David was handing over the reins of government to Solomon his son, he told him not to give in to fear because of the enormous responsibility that was coming upon him. He encouraged him to be strong and of good courage, assuring him that the LORD God would be with him, and would neither fail nor forsake him (1 Chronicles 28:20).
What is that situation threatening your peace and wellbeing? What is that mountain too high for you to surmount? What is that task that looks too big for you to accomplish? I encourage you to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might (Ephesians 6:10). Victory is yours in Jesus name.
