“And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not” (Revelation 2:21).
God does not delight in the punishment or death of the wicked. He would rather that the sinner return from his ways and live (Ezekiel 18:23). Hence, today’s Bible verse says God gives people space for repentance.
Indeed, God usually withholds punishment for sin to allow adequate time for us to repent. This is because God is long-suffering and of great mercy. The wise who are serious about their walk with God will take up that space and make good use of it. But those who are careless with their spiritual life and matters of eternity think little or nothing of the space for repentance that God constantly makes available.
To take full advantage of the space for repentance, one important thing to do is to stop finding excuses for sinful actions. Whatever is contrary to the commands of God should not be explained away because there can be no excuse that will be strong or genuine enough before God to justify ungodliness in any form, anywhere, anytime.
Friends, there is grave danger if we neglect to utilize the space and time God makes available to bring us to repentance. The danger is that we risk drowning deeper into “the depths of Satan” (Revelation 2:24). Sin will keep piling upon sin, progressively deadening the human conscience. At a point, sin will no longer be sinful, and that is a very terrible state for a Christian to slip into.
May God’s mercy keep us from completing the cycle of transgression to the point of running out of God’s time and space for repentance.
