“Thou art all fair, my love; there is no spot in thee” (Song of Solomon 4:7).
The lover in today’s scripture found no blemish, spot or defect in his beloved. There was no moral stain or character defect in the beloved. That is exactly what the Lord Jesus desires of every Christian. He wants us to be spotless and blameless.
There are two dimensions to this matter. The Bible says that the blood of Jesus Christ not only cleanses, but has also blotted out our transgressions, so that no trace of sin exists with us (Acts 3:19). Therefore, having been washed in the blood Jesus, the believer is spotless and without blemish. That is why God no longer remembers our sins and iniquities (Hebrews 10:17).
The second dimension is the fact that each individual Christian has a responsibility to be diligent in keeping himself spotless and blameless (2 Peter 3:14). The beloved in our scripture for today has no spot because she kept herself. She was not like the proverbial dog that is turned to his own vomit again or the pig that has been washed but returns to roll on the dirty, wet ground (2 Peter 2:22).
Finally, God has given us His word as a sanctifying or cleansing agent to help us attain and maintain that spotless and blameless state (John 17:17). Through the study and practice of the word, we are washed and presented to Christ a glorious church, not having spot, wrinkle, blemish or any such thing (Ephesians 5:26-27). May grace abounds to stand spotless and walk blameless before God all the days of our lives.
