CALL UPON GOD, HE WILL ANSWER

“Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish’s belly” (Jonah 2:1).

God has promised that when we call upon Him in trouble, He will answer and deliver us (Psalms 91:15). Sometimes, the trouble could be self-inflicted. Yet those who truly know God understand that His promise to hear us in the day of trouble remains because He is faithful.

Jonah was disobedient to divine instruction and the Lord put him under discipline by sentencing him into imprisonment in the belly of a fish. But while under discipline, Jonah pray to God and he was heard. Obviously, he realized that discipline is not hatred, and that God chastises those whom He loves (Hebrews 12:6). He understood that to be disciplined by the Lord is to be loved by Him. This gave him the courage to pray.

Also, Jonah must have understood that no matter how grave our sins are, we can always call upon God in repentance. The Lord once invited His people for a discussion on this matter and told them that even if their sins were as scarlet and as red as crimson, He would cleanse them if they would come to Him in penitence (Isaiah 1:18). Jonah confessed that his disobedience had taken him down into the belly of hell. But from there, he prayed and the Lord heard him (Jonah 2:2).

Finally, Jonah said he would look again, reminding us of the richness of God’s mercy. As we look again towards the Lord in prayer, may we see afresh His unchanging plans for our lives and receive strength to fulfil same, in Jesus mighty name.
