“And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetcht a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it” (Genesis 18:7).
The importance and value of physical fitness cannot be over-emphasized. Sometimes, being fit as a fiddle could determine whether a man would be able to access the blessings of God or not. Abraham at the age of ninety-nine could still run to entertain the harbingers of his blessings.
Three divine personalities visited Abraham to bless him. While there are several things we can bring out of this story, the physical fitness of the nonagenarian is worth nothing. The Bible says that Abraham ran to meet the men (Genesis 18:2). He also ran to his sheep pen to fetch a calf to dress for them. Of course, all these running would be a few steps, but the important point is that he ran.
At ninety-nine, Abraham could still run. At that advanced age, there was still a sprint in his walk. That speaks a lot about his physical fitness. He obviously had maintained a level of physical fitness that made him agile in old age. But for the mercy of God, Lot who was far younger almost missed his deliverance because he could not run (Genesis 19:16-22).
One takeaway from this message is that spirituality is not opposed to physical fitness. In fact, if you are not physically fit, you may find it difficult to engage in some spiritual activities like extended praying. The spiritual person must be physically fit to enjoy the dividends of his spiritual investments. May God help us all.
