“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16).
The Bible is an inspired collection of writings which are themselves inspired by the Spirit of God. Even though these writings have come to us through the pen of mortal men, the divine inspiration of the scriptures have been accepted by followers of God for more than two thousand years.
When it comes to hearing from God, the scripture is exceedingly profitable. To hear God’s opinion about acceptable doctrine, just consult the Bible. To the sincere, the words of the Bible will often come across with penetrative accuracy to convict, correct and instruct in the way of righteousness. Indeed, for the believing, the Bible can be so alive and personal that you can literally hear the Word talking to you and addressing your situation very directly (Hebrews 4:12-13).
Obedience to the written word of God is the ticket to hearing the voice of the Spirit. Even Jesus had to consult the scripture to take direction for His life. When the devil came to tempt Him, Jesus did not wait for a voice from heaven to give an answer. He simply looked to the scripture to obtain God’s voice for that moment (Luke 4:4). Again, to access divine leading at the commencement of His ministry, He consulted the written word to find where it was written of Him (Hebrews 10:7).
Many want to hear God in a spectacular fashion. But like Jesus, we must first master the art of hearing God from what is written. Then we can qualify for the spectacular.
