HEARING GOD FOR YOURSELF (X)

“For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool’s voice is known by multitude of words” (Ecclesiastes 5:3).

God definitely speaks through dreams. On several occasions, God communicated with Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus through dreams (Matthew 1:20).

But we must be careful with dreams because as good and valid as dreams are, they could be subject to manipulations. Sometimes, people can also be misled through misinterpretation of a genuine dream and thereby drift away from the will of God.

The Bible warns that it is not automatic that every dream would always be from God. Some dreams are the products of your own personal thoughts. When you keep thinking and worrying about a thing, your subconscious could create a dream from your cogitations (Ecclesiastes 5:3). Such a dream could hardly be said to have come from God. To depend on it as a message from God would be misleading.

The devil also gives dreams. The Bible shows that demons can infiltrate a person’s spiritual space and generate lying dreams and vanities that could lead to troubles (Zechariah 10:2). Even an unguarded prophet could have false dreams if he consciously or unconsciously opens himself up to demonic manipulations (Jeremiah 23:32).

If you want God to give you dreams as a credible and consistent channel of divine communication, you must take your relationship with Him seriously. You cannot be living a deviant, frivolous and godless life and still expect God to consistently speak to you through dreams. Yes, you may have valid dreams once in a while, but it will never be a dependable way of accessing the voice of God.
