“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1).
Dreams are by nature, spiritual encounters. Just as the Bible tells us to judge every spirit, so must we evaluate our dreams to be sure they are of God because it is not every dream that comes from God.
Several things can be drawn from our passage for today on how to validate dreams and judge them to know if they represent God’s voice or not. Any dream that does not exalt Jesus or validate His atoning work is not from God. Also, any dream that negates God’s love and teaches you to harm your neighbour cannot represent the voice of God.
Another fundamental rule that should never be compromised is that your dream must not contradict God’s word or lead you to do what the scripture condemns. Every dream that contradicts the scripture cannot be from God because God cannot contradict Himself. Such a dream must be trashed immediately, no matter how real it is.
A man was told in a dream to send away his wife of twelve years and mother of his three children because she was not the right woman for him. That is the voice of Satan. Any dream that leads you to divorce your wife and marry another man’s wife can neither be from God nor represent His voice.
But we will only be able to use the scripture to judge and validate our dreams when the words of Christ dwells in us richly (Colossians 3:16). Receive grace to give yourself to the study of His words.
