HEARING GOD FOR YOURSELF (XV)

“As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them” (Acts 13:2).

The point has been made severally that we need a good understanding of the objective voice of God embedded in the Bible to moderate and judge the subjective voices we might hear. We must therefore master the art of hearing God in the written word in order not to fall into error when the subjective voice of the Spirit comes.

Also, a dynamic prayer life is important if you will gain access to the voice of God. God often speaks to us in the place of prayer, especially if we pay attention to the motions of the Spirit. Similarly, you need a functional prayer life to enjoy some measure of accuracy in matters of discerning the voice of God. For example, dreams that come from a life soaked in prayer will often prove to be authentic.

It is also helpful to have an experienced and matured spiritual father or mentor through whom God could speak and with whom you can share your encounters. In addition, keeping a spiritual company is an asset. Paul accessed the voice of God that shaped his ministry forever through the spiritual company he kept (Acts 13:1-2). David surrounded himself with spiritually upright people like Nathan and Gad through whom he constantly heard from God (2 Chronicles 29:25).

But in it all, your spiritual preparation remains the most critical factor for effective and enduring access to God’s voice. Receive grace to maintain the right attitude before God at all times.
