HEARING GOD FOR YOURSELF (XVII)

“Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them?” (Ezekiel 14:3).

Having preconceived ideas in your heart about what you want God to say can hinder you from hearing His voice. The Bible labels this as having an idol in your heart. This has been a major impediment to accessing divine direction for many Christians.

In the days of Ezekiel, God warned that when a man comes to inquire of Him and already has his mind made up on what he wants to do, such a person has thereby set up an idol in his heart. That becomes a stumbling block that would prevent him from hearing anything from God. He would only hear the idol he has treasured in his heart.

Similarly, there are people who have preconceived notion of what the answer of God should be on a given subject of enquiry. When such people approach the Lord in prayer or seek counsel from His servants, the Lord said He will by Himself answer the person according to the multitude of idols or preconceived ideas in his heart (Ezekiel 14:4).

Beloved, it will be an exercise in futility when you come to God to ask His opinion about what you have already decided upon. Let no man think he could use the Lord to endorse his myopic view and acquire legitimacy for a position that God has no hand in.

O Lord, help us to always approach your presence with a desire to learn and not as one who already knows the answer.
