HEARING GOD FOR YOURSELF (XVIII)

“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye” (Psalms 32:8). 

One of the major hindrances to accessing God’s voice is wrong beliefs and faulty understanding of the subject. For example, some people, including supposed Christians believe that God no longer speaks to people in contemporary times. They think that personal communication with God ended with the apostolic age.

Holding such a notion as above or keeping friends with those who entertain such persuasion will kill the desire to hear God and block your access to divine revelations. Even if God were to speak, there is every possibility that you will doubt what you hear and treat spiritual encounters with unseriousness. You will also despise it when people come up with messages from the Lord.

The idea that God no longer speaks directly to people has no scriptural basis. God’s promise to instruct us is a promise to speak to us. Again, the very existence of spiritual gifts of prophecy, word of knowledge, word of wisdom and the like confirm that God still speaks today (1 Corinthians 12:10). Besides, the credible experiences of today’s Christians, including this writer testify that God’s voice is still for us today.

While the subject of hearing God could be subjective and open to abuses, it nonetheless remains a very valid concept that has adequate biblical backing. Besides, there are established biblical principles by which we may evaluate every claim to God’s voice.

Beloved, God still speaks to people. But His voice will come to those who believe and prepare themselves to hear Him.
