IN EVERYTHING BY PRAYER AND THANKSGIVING

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God” (Philippians 4:6).

By all means, you must pray in this season. Prayer is absolutely essential to Christian living. It connects you with God and helps you align with His purpose. Prayer releases the blessings of the Lord and positions us for victory over the enemy and all works of darkness. In everything, you must pray.

But as you pray, ensure that your supplication is always accompanied with thanksgiving. Sometimes, we get so entrapped by present challenges that we forget the countless blessings we have received and the kindness of God we have enjoyed. However, we should never allow current problems blind us to previous benefits of Providence. Be thankful for past mercies received, even as you hope for new mercies.

Again, we must be thankful for the privilege of access, the blessedness of being able to approach the Lord in prayer (Psalms 65:4). We must be thankful for the promises of God which form the basis of our expectation in prayer and assure us of God’s faithfulness to grant our petitions. And in all these, we are not talking about thanksgiving that is only of the tongue but the practice of approaching God in prayer with a grateful heart.

At the tomb of Lazarus, the matter at hand was serious and required urgent intervention. But Jesus knew that thanksgiving must precede prayer to get the Father’s attention. Thus He first gave thanks before praying Lazarus out of the tomb. May we always have a thankful heart in everything.
