“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name” (Psalms 100:4).
The admonition to give thanks occurs repeatedly in the Bible. The Psalms alone encouraged us to be thankful about thirty times, covering every day of the month, as it were. Among other things, the Psalmist says it is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord (Psalms 92:1).
The truth is that God has been good. You may not have all that you wanted but that won’t be a sufficient reason not to give thanks. Gratitude comes from considering what you have, not what you don’t have because what you do not have does not cancel what you do have. That is why one of our hymns says you should count your blessings, not your problems.
Thanksgiving is especially fitting for such a time as we are. Consider that despite all the roaring of the enemy in the outgone year, you are here by mercy, standing justified by God’s grace. In all your challenges, the Lord gave you sufficient measure of victory that you might take your place among the living in the new year. That alone should put you in full gratitude mode.
Friends, just as we are admonished to enter into the gates of God’s presence with thanksgiving, may I also encourage you to enter into this new year that God has graciously brought you into with thanksgiving. Life is a precious gift. Give thanks for the breath of life that God has freely given unto you.
Thanks be to God for yet another new year.
