“Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law” (Romans 13:8).
The Almighty God is very loving. In fact He is the very epitome of love. And because we have been made in His image, we share with Him that capacity to love. Thus, we all owe it to ourselves to love one another. Hence, the Bible says we should owe no man anything other than the debt of love.
Please understand that irrespective of what anyone has ever done to you, you owe no man hatred, vengeance or retribution. Beyond the duty of instilling discipline as imposed by your parental, supervisory or leadership position, you will sometimes find it more honourable to overlook certain insults and the misbehaviour of some people. That is why we are encouraged to keep forbearing and forgiving one another, even as Christ forgave us (Colossians 3:13).
When you show hatred to someone, you are using what you have which should have been for your peace, to pay a debt that you did not owe. In fact, every time you express a negative emotion, you are attempting to pay a debt you did not owe. David apparently understood this concept, judging from the way he handled his relationship with Saul. Instead of doing evil to Saul in response to his wickedness, David behaved himself wisely and kept on repaying him with kindness.
Such character as illustrated by David is what God expects of His children. Never recompense evil for evil but overcome evil with good (Romans 12:17-21). So shall the love of God flow through you to others.
