SURRENDER MORE (IX)

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5).

To surrender more is to surrender all. We see this clearly illustrated through the life of the Lord Jesus, our ultimate example of surrendering to God. Thus, in today’s Bible verse, we are told to learn from Him and let the same mind that worked in Him also operate in us.

At the heart of Christ’s approach to this issue is humility. For the purpose of this conversation, we can define humility as thinking less of yourself and seeing yourself less than you are in order to enhance the worth of another. Christ manifested this attribute towards mankind by shedding His glory so as to rescue fallen man and bring him into glory. But more importantly, He humbled Himself before God that the Father might be glorified.

Although Christ was in the form of God, being equal with the Father, He nevertheless surrendered to the will of the Father. He made Himself of no reputation and put on the form of a servant because He wanted to fulfil the Father’s will. Most of all, as a mark of His total and unreserved surrender to God, Christ submitted Himself to a cruel and inhumane death on the cross. He endured the cross and despised the shame to ensure that the Father’s pleasure was fully executed (Hebrews 12:2).

Jesus instructed us to learn of Him and go deeper in the school of humility (Matthew 11:29). We must learn His meekness and become lowly in heart like Him. Then we shall be able to surrender to the Father like He did. Shalom!
