SURRENDER MORE (VI)

“Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done” (Luke 22:42).

The typical Christian prays. We pray about our problems and petition God for our needs. But one type of prayer we hardly ever take up is the prayer of surrender. Yet, for a meaningful walk with God, it is something we must pray about daily.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with praying about your daily needs. Jesus gave permission to do so (Matthew 6:11). But for the serious believer, the prayer of surrender should be his most important daily need. Telling God on daily basis that you have surrendered to Him, that you need Him and cannot do without Him is fundamental to a healthy spiritual life. Perhaps, nothing is more pleasing to God than hearing you commit to doing His will at all times.

Among other things, praying in this manner will help you retain the consciousness of your need for and dependence on God. Besides, we must ask God in prayer to help us surrender because we are constantly being pulled back from surrendering to Him by the world and by our flesh. Yielding to God and to His will then becomes something we cannot do in our own might. At a point, even Jesus needed help from above to submit to the will of God (Luke 22:43).

For this reason, brethren, I beseech you to present yourself to God in prayer as a living sacrifice every day (Romans 12:1). Tell Him that you yield to Him and consecrate yourself to Him afresh every day. It shall be well with you.
