“For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment” (James 2:13).
Everyone needs the mercy of God. Even the best among men will often need God’s mercy from time to time. This is because of our inadequacies and the limitations of even our best efforts at living righteously.
Man’s best has never been good enough to satisfy God’s righteousness. The Bible says we are all as an unclean thing, and “all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags” before the Lord (Isaiah 64:6). That makes us prime candidates for God’s judgment before which we stand no chance. But because of His love for us, God introduced mercy to rescue us from the sentence of judgment.
God is both just and merciful. Although mercy and justice sometimes seem to conflict, God’s design is that mercy would prevail. This is not just about God’s redemptive plan, but also His daily dealings with us. Justice may demand condemnation and punishment, but mercy pleads pardon and prevails. A classical case is that of wicked Ahab who humbled himself before the Lord and obtained mercy (1 Kings 21:29).
But it should be emphasized that there is time for everything, including God’s mercy (Psalms 69:13). If you desire mercy, seek same while it may be found and humble yourself before God like Ahab. Seek the Lord while He may be found and call upon Him while He is near (Isaiah 55:6).
May God who is rich in mercy lavish on us the multitude of His mercy. Everywhere judgment is hanging, may the voice of mercy triumph in Jesus name.
