Today’s Message – 2022-02-01

Oluwamuyiwa Okuseinde

“Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the Lord will do great things” (Joel 2:21).

Great is the Lord. He is of great wisdom and power. His works are also inexorably great. The Bible testifies that His works are “great and marvellous” (Revelation 15:3). It follows therefore, that God is able to do great things in our lives.

The prophet Joel said the Lord will indeed do great things for you. That expression has a variety of meaning. First, it means that God will make you grow in all good things. It also means that God will make you become great or important, promote you, and make you powerful. The implication is that God will not only do great things for you, He will also make you great, just as He said to Abraham (Genesis 12:2).

If the Lord has given us such promises, then we have every reason to expect great things from Him this year. His explicit promise makes that the sensible thing to do. When human beings whose subsistence is not guaranteed make promises to us, we raise our expectations accordingly. How much more should we have righteous expectations when God almighty makes us promises.

We can raise our expectations because we know that God is faithful, and the expectations of those who trust in Him shall not be cut off (Proverbs 23:18). Besides, the Bible is full of examples that confirm to us that God does not shatter the expectations of the righteous. Certainly, your expectation to receive from the Lord shall be fulfilled.

Be encouraged by the example of the man at the temple gate called ‘Beautiful’. He looked up to the servants of God with great expectation. At the end, he got more than he bargained for. As you expect great things from the Lord this year, may pleasant surprises from the Lord become a constant refrain in your life.
