Today’s Message – 2022-02-14

Oluwamuyiwa Okuseinde

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).

Love is a very powerful force. Many talk about it, but very few understand its true meaning. Most people who claim to be in love are only in it for selfish reasons. Yet, in spite of the misconception, this incredibly powerful force continues to hugely motivates human actions in so many ways.

The supreme evidence of love is sacrifice – self sacrifice. True love does not seek its own benefits. The lover never takes advantage of the object of his or her affection, but will gladly prioritize and pursue the positive interests of the beloved (1 Corinthians 13:4-7). When love expresses itself in such selflessness, it qualifies to be labelled “greater love”.

Christ gave us an example of this kind of love when He laid aside His heavenly glory and came to this earth for our sake. While in the world, He never did anything for Himself but did everything for us. Then He gave His life to pay for our sins and to reconcile us to the Father. As Christians, we are expected to follow Christ’s example and walk in love just as He did.

The Bible tells us that God is love and that true love is of God (1 John 4:7-8).
To love truly is to love just as God loves. It is to seek the supreme good of others and be a blessing them in every possible way. We cannot therefore do things that will displease God or jeopardize the destiny of others in the name of love.

Finally, the cardinal rule of love that Jesus gave is to do unto others what you would like others to do unto you (Matthew 7:12). Don’t expect what you cannot give and never give what you won’t like others to give you. If you do these things, happy are you.
