“And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given” (Mark 4:24).

Words are important. Just as the words we speak control our lives, so do the words we hear. Essentially, you are what you hear. If you keep hearing the wrong words, many things will go wrong in your life. But if you hear the right words, you will end well. Hence, Jesus said we should be careful what we hear.

The human ear is connected to the heart. In fact whatever a man hears goes directly into his heart. The words you hear will surely impact on your heart. Consider the following examples.

Rahab told the spies that when the people of Jericho heard about what God was doing for the children of Israel, their hearts melted (Joshua 2:11). What you hear will either melt your heart or give you courage. We do not know the exact words Abigail spoke to Nabal, but we do know that after hearing her words, Nabal’s heart died within him, and he became as a stone (1 Samuel 25:37-38).

But for Jacob, the good news that his son Joseph was alive revived his spirit and strengthened his heart (Genesis 45:27). More importantly, the Bible says faith cannot come into your heart except through the word of God you hear continually (Romans 10:17). That was why when Jesus was going to the house of Jairus and people came from his house with bad news, Jesus immediately spoke faith to him and encouraged him to believe (Mark 5:36).

So, watch the kind of words you allow your ears to hear. Choose to hear only those things that will help your heart and benefit your life. The word of God remains your best bet.
