“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus taught us to call God ‘Father’ (Luke 11:2). After His resurrection, He reaffirmed through Mary that we and Him have the same Father (John 20:17). Since God our Father is an eternal Being, He must therefore be an eternal Father to His children.

It must be emphasized that God is our everlasting Father. The everlasting nature of His fatherhood is not only in matters of time, but also in the space dimension. His fatherhood extends to all regions and races, peoples and places, persons and positions, whether rich, poor, righteous, unrighteous, educated or illiterate. The longitude and latitude of His fatherhood is immeasurable.

For the redeemed in particular, the fatherhood of God never expires. He is Father for all seasons. We find a picture of this in the father of the prodigal son which is illustrative of the father heart of God. In spite of his misbehaviour, the prodigal still had the boldness to call his dad, ‘father’ (Luke 15:21). It is gratifying to know that even in our sin, we can call on our heavenly Father to ask for His forgiveness and help.

Jesus came to show us a pattern of our heavenly Father. Thus, Isaiah prophesied of His coming, that He shall be called, “The everlasting Father”. Our passage for further reading shows that the believer’s ancestry dates back to God through Christ. If you will get yoked with Christ today, you will experience the love of God as a Father. Pray now and tell Jesus to help you encounter God as a father. You will never be the same again.
