“And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you” (Matthew 24:4).
On at least sixty-five occasions, the Bible tells us to “take heed”. By those words, God is putting responsibility on you, telling you that you have a duty to be careful and watch out for yourself because you are the chief accounting officer over your life.
This is important because we are in a world where people like to shift responsibilities and blame others but themselves for whatever happens to them. Children want to blame parents for how they have turned out in life. Citizens want to blame government and leadership for the state of their country. And most of all, parishioners want to blame the clergy for their spiritual and material conditions.
However, for those who want to be safe, stable, and successful, Jesus says you must take responsibility for your life. In particular, your spiritual security is squarely in your hands. It is you that must be careful to ensure that no one deceives or leads you into error. And if you ever found yourself in error, don’t blame anybody. Hold yourself to account and work your way out of error by the help of God.
Always remember that we all have equal access to God’s word and to His Spirit. The Bible says “there is one body, one Spirit, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all” (Ephesians 4:4-6). Therefore, you have no excuse to be deceived.
If you take responsibility and give attention to your spiritual wellbeing, you will be able to hold your head even when others are being deceived. Receive grace to pay the price for your spiritual security.
