“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (Acts 17:11).
One of the greatest blessings you can have as a believer is to have a honest and trusted spiritual leader who truly knows the Lord as your guide. However, your spiritual wellbeing and eternal salvation can only be guaranteed if you seek to know God for yourself.
To be a Christian indeed, knowing and discovering God beyond what you hear from others is very important. That will fortify you against being misled by well meaning but misguided preachers. It will also keep you from being manipulated by false prophets.
To know God for yourself, you must labour in the Scriptures by creating adequate time to study and meditate therein. Many Christians have little time for personal Bible study. While it is helpful to belong to a church where the Bible is taught and the teacher is an illustration of what he teaches, that will never be a substitute for personal Bible study.
The Berean Christians prioritized personal Bible study. In their passion for spiritual growth and the pursuit of God, they often left church services to resume personal Bible study in their respective homes. Although they were taught by a great Bible teacher in Apostle Paul, that did not stop them from checking the Scriptures to verify what they heard from him.
To enable and encourage this Berean attitude, God gave each of us His Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth (John 16:13). Every time you read your Bible, feel free to ask Him to help you know God the more. May you ever increase in the knowledge of the Lord. Amen!
