A POSITIVE LESSON FROM JEZEBEL (II)

“For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water” (1 Kings 18:4).

Jezebel was quite a remarkable character. Despite all the bad things she did, we cannot ignore the passion she had for taking care of the messengers of her god, Baal. Nearly a thousand of them were permanently on her payroll.

Obviously, Jezebel did not see Baal prophets as jobless layabouts, as some view ministers of God today. She felt that priests should be nurtured and succoured because they laboured in intercession for men before divinity. How wonderful it would be if God’s people do the same for the servants of the true God who are amongst them.

As far as I know, there is no single Bible reference to anyone feeding eight hundred and fifty prophets of God daily. At best, we have Obadiah who took care of one hundred servants of the Lord during famine. But Jezebel excelled with the massive volume of priests that she took care of. That is quite telling.

But it will be alright if we also will take up the challenge and do what Jezebel did, according as God has blessed us. If you cannot cater for hundreds, go the length to which God has enabled you. And if you cannot do it daily, let someone rejoice because of you on a weekly or monthly basis, according to the capacity God has given you. Jezebel did her own. Obadiah did his own. Now, it is your turn to do your own. Receive grace in Jesus name.
