“The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?” (Obadiah 1:3).
There are many things that God hates. Pride is one of them (Proverbs 6:16-17). Usually, the proud is irritating and displeasing to both God and man. When pride lodges in a man’s heart, destruction becomes imminent (Proverbs 16:18).
But the critical point to note in today’s scripture is that pride is a deceiver. It is so because Satan, the arch deceiver himself is the spirit that sponsors pride. That spirit of deception gives you a false impression of who you really are, the measure of your worth and people’s estimation of your value.
Edom was made small among the heathen and was greatly despised, but pride deceived her to think herself of something important (Obadiah 1:2). Pride tells you that you are higher than you truly are and makes you forget that there is someone higher than you are.
An even more dangerous dimension is the fact that pride makes you forget that the Almighty God is up above, ruling in the affairs of men. Pride makes a man insensitive to the fact that God who is higher than the highest is still on the throne and that He can bring down the proud in just a moment.
For this reason, we are admonished to put on humility as a garment (1 Peter 5:5). God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6). May grace abound to us to walk humbly before our God.
