GENUINE REPENTANCE

“Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance” (Matthew 3:8).

Repentance is very fundamental to the Christian walk. Indeed, it is the starting point of any meaningful relationship with the Lord. Thus, Jesus Christ who came to restore man’s relationship with God began His earthly ministry with the message of repentance (Mark 1:15).

For repentance to be genuine, effective and productive, it must be sincere, total and thorough. The repentance that God wants must be such that would lead to transparent reformation. The repentant believer must have fruits of visible changes to show. It is not enough to weep or put on sackcloth and ashes. There must be a complete turn away from evil or whatever we are doing which God does not want, and a steady movement into a life that is well pleasing to God.

For genuine repentance to take place, we must come to that point where we see clearly that God is right, admit promptly that we are in the wrong, and are fully willing to make amend and restitution where required. Unfortunately, just like the church in Thyatira, most people are simply unwilling to repent, even when God has given them ample space (Revelation 2:21). Rather than see their wrong, people prefer to give excuses that will justify their iniquity.

Beloved, be sure that evil will not go on unpunished. The Lord is only being patient with us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). Is there anything that the Holy Spirit has convicted you of, demanding that you repent? Now is the time to heed the voice of the Spirit. Receive grace in Jesus Christ’s name.
