WAKE UP AND PRAY

“And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD” (Genesis 19:27).

Prayer is a recurring subject in religion, seen by all humanity as an instrument by which men connect or commune with divinity. For the Christian, prayer not only facilitate fellowship with God, it is also an indispensable weapon of warfare.

In today’s scripture, Abraham teaches us that we must make prayer our priority in all things. We must have a practice of making prayer the first duty of the day. This was also the pattern with the Lord Jesus. He would get up early in the morning, a great while before dawn and depart to a solitary place where He could not be disturbed, just to pray (Mark 1:35).

Again, prayer must undergird everything that we do. The Bible says that everything must be by prayer (Philippians 4:6). Nothing is too small to pray about and nothing is too big to subject to prayer. Also, there is nothing too carnal, worldly or unspiritual that we cannot pray about. Everything must be taken to the Lord in prayer.

Finally, the Christian must not be selfish in prayer. He must be generous and let his prayer to God accommodate other people. At the time Abraham appeared before the Lord in prayer, it was to intercede for his nephew, Lot. Samuel said it would be a sin if he should stop praying for Israel (1 Samuel 12:23). Indeed, the Bible expressly commands that we should pray for all men (1 Timothy 2:1).

As we seek to be diligent in prayer, may God baptize us with the spirit of grace and supplication in Jesus name.
