“Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness” (Psalms 30:11).
The story in our passage for today is quite pathetic. Jesus came to a city called Nain and as He approached the gate of the city, He met a funeral procession. The corpse of a young man, the only son of a widow was being taken out for burial.
It is ironical that the name, Nain, means “beauty“. It was a beautiful city that indicated pleasantness, comeliness, comfort and delight. But unfortunately, the happenings in the life of this widow negated everything the city offered through its name. Nothing was beautiful, pleasant or comely in her life. Like Jericho, the situation of her city was good, but her life was not pleasant (2 Kings 2:19).
On the contrary, bitterness, sorrow and very ugly incidents characterized her life. Death seemed to be a recurring decimal in her family. The painful loss of her husband, and the calamity of losing her only son were devastating events that could never delight the heart. Life must have become hopeless for her and there was nothing beautiful to look forward to.
Then, Jesus entered the scene and everything turned around. The procession to the graveyard was permanently terminated and death gave way to life. The evil pattern in the family that targeted the survival of the male gender was ended and hope for the future was reborn.
Friends, Jesus makes the difference all the time. No matter how bad the situation is, Jesus will turn it around. Today, may Jesus step into your situation and turn your mourning into dancing again.
