DO NOT REPAY EVIL WITH EVIL

“Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee” (Proverbs 20:22).

Many times, people think that they are justified to repay evil with evil, paying back those who offend them in their own coin. Although, it may soothe our canal self, but God’s word teaches otherwise.

The Bible says you should not avenge yourself by doing injury to those who hurt you (1 Peter 3:9). To do so is to be guilty of the same evil. It is foolish to repay evil with evil because two wrongs do not make a right. To repay evil with evil is to multiply the wrong done, and introduce more evil into the social space. That would neither profit you nor anyone else.

What then should you do? The recommendation of scripture is mainly two-fold. The first is to wait on the Lord, committing your cause unto Him, and trusting Him to handle the matter as He deems right. However, God reserves the right to act at His own time and in His own way. His time, though, may not be our time, and His way would certainly not be our way (Isaiah 55:8).

Secondly, we are to overcome evil with good by deliberately showing kindness to those who have hurt us when opportunity presents itself. Thus, if you discover that your enemy is hungry, give him food (Romans 12:20-21). Jesus encouraged us further to love, bless, and pray for our enemies. Such actions authenticate us as true children of God (Matthew 5:44-45).

Certainly, it would require God’s grace to practice this Bible lifestyle. But God is ready to pour sufficient grace on us if we are willing. May God help us in Jesus name.
