“But Jezebel his wife came to him, and said unto him, Why is thy spirit so sad, that thou eatest no bread?” (1 Kings 21:5).
Bad people sometimes teach great, positive lessons. It is wisdom to learn those lessons for our good. These messages are certainly not meant to launder Jezebel’s image. We must eschew her godless and wicked deeds in their entirety. But we should not throw away the good things she unwittingly taught the world.
Jezebel cared for her husband, Ahab to a level that some Christian couples have not attained. She took personal responsibility for the happiness of her husband. When Ahab became sad because he was denied the vineyard of Naboth that he desired, Jezebel intervened because she could not bear to see her husband sorrowful to the point of skipping meals.
Certainly, the wicked nature of her intervention must be roundly condemned, but we cannot ignore the fact that she cared enough about the emotional wellbeing of her husband and did something about what was making him sad. She did not rest until she was able to put a smile on Ahab’s face.
Unfortunately, there are Christians couples who sleep on the same bed but are complete strangers to each other’s struggles. There are husbands who would not care if the wife ate or not, and wives who would not even notice that the husband did not touch the food she served. There are couples who sit together in church, but the husband would not know that the wife had no offering to give.
To what extent can you go in righteousness to see to the happiness, peace and comfort of your spouse?
