BE GLAD FOR THE SUCCESS OF OTHERS

“But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews” (Nehemiah 4:1).

The Jews, under the leadership of Nehemiah took up the assignment of rebuilding the walls of their city. While the work progressed, certain folks led by Sanballat became angry at the success and progress of the work and began to mock the Jews.

Such is our world that some people get angry because something good is happening to their neighbour. They get unsettled about the success of another and even begin to fight it. For some fellows, the good news about their friend is bad news to them and an occasion to ridicule the good fortune of the one whom God has blessed. That is the spirit of Sanballat and Tobias. It ought not to be found amongst us as brethren.

Sometimes, at the root of this wicked and ungodly spirit is jealousy and envy. Someone could get angry with you because he wished he was in your place but could not get there. More importantly, people could be disturbed by your progress because they do not understand what God is doing in your life, and this is where it gets really dangerous. We must beware of fighting what God is doing in a man’s life

The Bible says we should rejoice with those who rejoice (Romans 12:15). Other people’s success and blessings must never become the source of sorrow, anger or ridicule for us. May God grant us the grace to celebrate the progress of others and derive joy from their joy.
