“But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters” (1 Peter 4:15).
Longsuffering is a key component of the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22). In fact, we are enjoined to endure hardness as good soldiers of Jesus Christ (2 Timothy 2:3). The Bible also said that it is given unto us in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake (Philippians 1:29).
But the scripture also provided a context for this call to endure suffering. We are told that the Christian should not suffer “as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters”, and then claim to be exhibiting the virtue of endurance and longsuffering.
The point being made is that you will not be commended for enduring suffering for the wrong reasons. Indeed, when you suffer as an evildoer or as a worker of iniquity, the word, ‘endurance’ does not apply in any way. You are only suffering the just consequences for your wrongdoing and paying for your misdemeanour.
Beloved, there is neither glory nor honour in being labelled as a wrongdoer. There are no trophies for sin and iniquity. Only judgment, which produces punishment and suffering. For God will not celebrate evil, neither will He rejoice with evildoers.
In view of the above, God’s word recommends that the Christian must learn to do well (Isaiah 1:17). Enduring suffering while doing well has rewards. May the Lord reward you for every pain of righteousness you have endured in Jesus name.
