“But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men” (Matthew 16:23).
To succeed at any venture in life, you must learn how to deal with distractions. Distractions come in many ways, but the goal is always the same, namely, to shift your focus from what is important so you might give attention to less important things.
To deal with distractions, you must first identify them. Sometimes, distractions could wear the garment of legitimate concerns, making it difficult to spot. For example, when Jesus told the disciples that He would be crucified, Peter “took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee”. But Jesus immediately spotted the distraction, declaring Peter to be an offense unto Him (Matthew 16:22-23).
We are also told that in the days that were before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered into the ark (Matthew 24:38). Now, all these are legitimate things that we must give attention to as long as we are in this world. But unfortunately, these things distracted the people from the more important and urgent task of preparing for the impending deluge.
Beloved, we should not try to explain away distractions or justify them. Rather, we must face them squarely and get them out of our way so that we may accomplish God’s purpose for life. May God help us all in Jesus name.
