“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way” (Psalms 37:23).
The Bible says the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord. Certainly, the subject matter in this Bible verse is divine guidance, but there is also an adjoining subject that is equally vital for Christian living. It is the fact that the good man, that is, the Christian, must take steps.
In discussions about faith, this is what is called corresponding action. If the Christian is not ready to take steps, there will be nothing for the Lord to order. Any conversation on Christian living and faith in Jesus Christ that does not acknowledge and, in fact, emphasize the place of the believer’s responsibility to take practical steps should be deemed incomplete.
The Bible clearly says that as the body without the spirit is dead, so also, faith without works is dead (James 2:26). The works here refer to the things you have to do in order to enjoy what God has already done for you. Truly, God can do all things, but there are some things He will not do for you. No matter how well you pray, certain things will not happen until you take appropriate steps.
For example, prayer can provide food for you, but prayer will not put the food in your mouth. In response to your faith, God can give you a car, but faith will not drive the car for you. You must take the step to learn driving so you can enjoy the vehicle your faith has produced. May God help us all.
