“Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee” (Matthew 17:27).
Prayer is generally defined as a means of communicating with God. More specifically, it is a spiritual tool that has been given to us with which we can receive what God has done or prepared for us.
But the truth is that more often than not, prayer must be followed by appropriate actions. Otherwise, we may not see or possess what God has given to us in the place of prayer. Unfortunately, many people fail to do what they need to do in order to see what God has done for them.
Peter had a financial need and came into the presence of Jesus. That equals the act of praying. Jesus told him to take his hook and go to the sea, that the first fish he would catch would come with the money he needed. Simply put, the Lord prepared a miracle for him and it was his duty to do the needful to possess what God had prepared.
Certainly, Peter would never have seen what the Lord had done if he did not do what he was required to do. Obviously, he knew that staying perpetually in the presence of the Master would not deliver the coin reserved for him in the mouth of the fish.
The lesson is clear, namely, he who has prayed must also act. May the Lord grant us wisdom for appropriate actions.
